Learn to Code: 3 Websites to Learn to Code iOS, HTML, CSS and more!

Want to learn to Code iOS?

How many times have you had an idea for a great iPhone app or a new and useful website? You’re not alone. I get these ideas in my head about three times a day!

What if you could learn to code iOS, the software the iPhone runs on? I know I know, the language isn’t technically called iOS. Most iOS apps are coded in Objective-C, Xcode, and HTML5.

I’ve been looking for good and FREE or cheap resources to learn to code iOS or any language and I may have had some good luck come my way. I’ve compiled 3 fantastic places to learn to code iOS, HTML, and CSS! And the best part? It’s free to code a website or iOS app, so you can practice as much as you’d like!

”But Adam, I come to your site to see your photos. What does all of this coding jargin have to do with photography?”

Nothing. If you learn to code iOS, it will not make you a better photographer. I will say that if you’d ever like to start a site to display your photos, or would like to change anything on your current site, why not know how to do that? Also, with more and more people viewing photos and videos on iOS devices, wouldn’t it be cool to learn to code iOS and have your own app for your business? I’m not saying you won’t be successful if you don’t learn, but if you have the time and the drive, why not?

1. Treehouse

Treehouse is the newest kid on the block in terms of resources when your desire is to learn to code iOS (or HTML/CSS). Founded by CEO Ryan Carson in November of 2011, Treehouse says their goal is to “..teach Web Design, Development and iOS to people everywhere, in order to help them achieve their dreams and change the world.” After watching some of their videos and just browsing their site, the teaching model they have is great and very intuitive. This is the place to learn to code iOS! As you watch and interact with your very own code, you get achievements to encourage you to keep going! Treehouse isn’t free, but it is very inexpensive ($25/month) and they also have a GREAT Student Deal! Besides, they were mentioned in the Wall Street Journal!

2.30 Days to Code HTML and CSS

Now you can’t learn to code iOS here but iPhone apps also run HTML5 so this is where everyone should start right? HTML and CSS are the backbone of everything we see on the web! So that can help you learn to code iOS as well. The guys over at Tuts+ have always had great tutorials on Photoshop, Illustrator and other software. They’ve recently launched what I call “30 Days.” The videos are short, concise, and focus on industry standards. Taught by Jeffrey Way, a master of code himself, you get a proportional dose of humor and great coding advice. Best of all, the videos are FREE!

3. Codeacademy

These guys seem to be the most interactive of the three. Codeacademy focuses on learning by doing. Similar to learning with Treehouse, you go through weekly lessons on Javascript and it’s an absolute pleasure. If you have any questions along the way, you can get hints and tricks, as well as contact them. Codeacademy is free so sign up and learn to code iOS now!

Which one is my personal favorite? Treehouse is definitely my favorite if you want to learn how to code iOS, HTML/CSS, or other coding languages. The entire environment for learning is better than the others too, and you can learn all of the different languages in it as well. They also have great Twitter support.

Honorable Mentions you should checkout:

-W3Schools can be useful but it’s not nearly as interactive as these other three.

-CSSBasics is great for CSS basics as well!

Feel free to shoot any questions you to me at Twitter or Email Me. Happy Coding!

Philadelphia Timelapse Trailer

Over the past 6 months, I’ve been working on a new and exciting personal project entitled “Philadelphia”. It’s a short film using timelapse to illustrate the different characteristics of places in the city at different times and how that makes the city unique. I’ve got a small promo ready and would love to share. Enjoy!

Oscar Party at The Boyertown Car Museum

There are times when a client comes to you and basically says “What do you think?” as in, they’re giving you full creative control because they trust you. It’s more fun than it is a badge of honor. I’ve worked with the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville before for the TEDxPhoenixville event. We shot at the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and it was a ton of fun!

This shoot was for the Colonial Theatre’s Annual Oscar Party which you can find out about here: Colonial Oscar Party
